My Background & Approach To Nudity

My parents are both from India, living in the UK as first generation immigrants,  they had an arranged marriage, my mother was 16 and father 21 at the time.  I was born a year later!

Although my mother was very young, I was not brought up by a teenage mother.  We have a large family and at the time we lived with the Grandparents and my Uncle/Aunties also lived nearby.  For those not familiar with the Indian way of life, a baby is rarely the sole responsibility of the parents alone.

My pre-teen and early teens was quite tough, although I was never alone, always had a lot of family, including similar age cousins around, my family’s income was not that great so didn’t have the luxuries that the modern childhood expects as standard.

The quality of life improved in my early teenage years when my parents invested in business of their own, however that brought additional challenges.   As well as hard work, there were also benefits, for example I learnt to communicate with the public from early age through serving customers in the shop that my parents ran.  Whilst at the time, I did it because it was expected of me, now looking back I can see the benefits that it provided me by giving me the confidence to talk with anyone, even the people I hardly know, till the cows come home.

During my secondary school period, I had a lot of very good friends, my parents were very understanding and I had no issues with multiracial and gay friends.   Being Indian, I was subject to strict orders regarding any relationship beyond friendship.  I did not wear anything that would attract attention and was brought up to believe that Sex was for later on in life.

When the time came to select a suitable university, I had the opportunity to move to another part of the country to live with close friends of the family and distant relative who I had admired all my life and knew about their naturist like life style.  I say ‘like’ because they weren’t committed naturist, they were not member of any organisation or club and had no badge to say they liked being in the nude whenever they felt like it, but as a family, they were just natural.  This fitted in with my way of thinking and although I had no idea whether I would like to be a naturist or not, and no one asked me or invited me to be one, I just felt comfortable with people who were very relaxed about their approach to nudity.  Most of the time, the nudity only became visible when it was most suited, for example if someone had finished showering or bath, they didn’t bother covering up when going from the bathroom to the bedroom to get dressed, or when on beach or park, the female partner had no issues about going topless or completely nude if and when she desired.

There is obviously lot more that can be said to describe the life style, but it was almost like a dream for me, it was a level of freedom that I felt close to but never had.  So when I was accepted at a uni not too far away from their home, it was agreed by everyone in the families that it would be best if I stayed at with them rather than uni accommodation.  I was delighted because I had great admiration for my new family and I was made very welcome.  This type of arrangement is not unusual in the Indian circle.

At my new home, in the early stages, I was not able to conduct my life in the same way as my new family.   No one told me that I had to, I knew it was the right thing to do but I also knew it was going to take a little while for me to get used to being so free.  My issue was the fact that I did not have the confidence in myself to be free and nude as I pleased, there were still the voices in the back of my head saying it’s not right, what would people think etc.

It wasn’t until later on during the summer when my new family was planning holidays that I had to decide whether to commit to naturism or not.   I had the option of going to France on holidays in our very large caravan with 4 of us or spend the holiday time with my family in the midlands.  I decide that it would not be right for me to separate myself from my new family so packed my stuff into the caravan and off we went.

It took couple of days to drive down to the South of France, to Cape d’Agde and we arrived in the late afternoon.  The caravan was parked up near by the beach and it was a very large site next to the main complex with hotels and apartments for naturists.

http://www.agdenaturisme.com/site/index.php?page=ve_laplage

As we arrived, I noted that most people were nude or semi nude and they looked quite normal to me because by that time, I had seen enough nudity at home not to be too embarrassed by the naked body.

Seeing children and old age people all together in the same place, also has the impact of confirming that all is well, no need to panic.  I was 19 at the time and therefore had experienced enough of life to know what I wanted.

When the ‘Adults’ were setting up rest of the equipment, I was asked whether I would like to go and have a look around the beach with Mark – a teenage boy, the youngest member of the family at the time.  We were told that we could leave our clothes behind if we intended to go into the sea.  This seemed like the logical thing to do and I didn’t think even for a moment before shedding my sundress and running out naked onto the beach which was less than 20 meters away.  AND that was my entry into the naturist world and I have not looked back since.

My approach to nudity is with pure heart, in that I know what I like and why I like it.  It is NOT for sex as is the case for almost all the females who I have met through naturism.  I am not fazed by anyone,  I can quite happily walk down the high street naked and not feel that I have no clothes on.  I don’t look at myself, so why should I worry.  Over the years, my confidence and belief has grown.  I am not afraid of people because I know that in most cases they mean no harm.  There have been times when men have assumed that just because I’m naked, they can approach me, they soon learn that I don’t have any hidden interests and that there is no benefit in them trying to persuade me to do anything that I obviously am not interested in.

My attitude is to talk to everyone in the same way whether they are nude or not.   For example if a nice respectably dressed person stops and talks to another about something quite simple and relevant to the situation, they are not considered as a threat,  this should be the same if they are not wearing anything.

This tends to bring normality and mutual respect.  I have never been without a member of my family when nude in public.  I don’t go to places where I might experience anything unsavoury.  So all in all I have very happy memories of being in the nude.

My main philosophy regarding nudity is that, it’s what we are, it’s a life style, so it is with you wherever you are.  You don’t need to go anywhere to experience the benefits of naturist thinking.   Some naturist might argue that naturist is a community thing, however I would argue that naturist is very personal thing first and a social activity later.  You first need to be comfortable being nude alone, have a clear understanding that you can enjoy the experience of doing everyday things whilst nude.  Being in touch with yourself bring more confidence, you get used to being in that state and later when you have company, you don’t feel the need to make a big deal about being in the nude and can just continue enjoying the natural feelings you are used to.

I am very often asked about nudity and sex.  This is another discussion but I can perhaps say this;  If anyone, naturist or otherwise uses nudity as preliminary to sexual activity, then obviously their mind will associate nudity to sex.  IF however you do the everyday thing(s) make your bed, clean the bath, clear up the kitchen, do the painting, clear the bins, do bit of gardening, clean the car, sunbathe in the garden or the park, walk on the beach… all in the nude…. then you will realise that being nude is same as being dressed but with that little bit extra sensation of being closer to nature and therefore that little bit more rewarding.

The ultimate benefit of a healthy approach to nudity is a better understanding of the people and the world we live in, it bring people closer together and allows discussion to take place that might otherwise not happen.  It allows us to be closer to the people we love and care for.  This is an enormous subject that can take you into many different directions.  I am by no means an expert on any of these subjects.  But I have benefit of having gained a wide ranging experience through my Indian upbringing, English education and worldwide experiences.   I’m just trying to explain my own views and wishes, with the hope that it generates discussion and we can perhaps help to accelerate the changing attitudes so that we can enjoy the benefits in our life time.

In India, naturism and nudism are misunderstood as sexism. We can’t trust in such groups. Do u know any pure naturist groups in India

  2. Dr. Insanity Says:

    Really refreshing.
The ancient world was no coward when it came to nudity. Indian scriptures are a testimony to the fact that the ancient Indians were cool about nudity. There are several instances of women roaming around nude in public. The prudishness came with Islamic rule and Victorian British. However, we need to revive our tradition.
Dear Godiva, Being of Indian origin, please help the Indians get rid of this prudishness. Yoiu can take the lead in starting an Ancient Indian Dress Parade where women will first encouraged to dress like ancient princesses who wore revealing and transparent clothes and gradulaay they can move to nudism. All the best.

All these were very rational blogs- and I feel that naturists are more natural than textile people. In the naturist meets that I have been to, no one has ever commented on my body shape, although , before embracing naturism, I was also very ashamed about my lean body and skinny legs. Some people have an inferiority complex about the size of their genitals or breasts but in a naturist surrounding , one probably does not even look at those parts. A naturist lady from Bangladesh told me that her sexual appetite reduces after a naturist outing. After we were quite pally, she said that she is a little concerned about her breast size, but believe me, I never noticed it when she was nude! In another nude meet, I met a lady from China , who had one of her breasts removed, but was the least bothered when she took part in outdoor activities. Is’nt that the spirit of true naturism?

    Dear Ladygod1va,

As is the case with many others who’ve responded to your blog post, I too found it to be refreshing, inspirational, and a little pleasantly surprising.

It was pleasantly surprising because in my experience with Indian people, my impression was that they are generally speaking very concerned with being modest in their dress. So to read your views was a pleasant surprise.

Also, you made a separation between nudity and sex. You said that your nudity is not to be considered an invitation to sex. How wonderful it was to read that!

My practice of nudity at home is fueled by the comfort that it brings, especially during the hot summer. It would be wonderful to be out in the open, however it’s my fear that it would be understood. You understand, though.

You stated in such a simple, and eloquent manner that you know who you are, and like it.

    Many thanks.

    Jude

This is soo refreshing to read….an honest and open view. I have always felt happier nude, however, have had very “British” parents, and wife !. I recently spent time working in Holland, where the attitude to nudity are as I see it – open and relaxed, and completely non-sexual.

Hope you’ve had a great summer with plenty of opportunities to be clothes free.

We went on holiday to Gran canaria and visited the nude beach in Maspalomas a few times, which was great.

Being on a nude beach in the sunshine was great, though I must admit I still prefer the freedom of being clothes free in the great outdoors (eg mountains) than on an official nudist beach.

I plan to to keep on enjoying the freedom of hiking naturally in the mountains and hope others may join me on some walks sometime.

I know that public nudity of this type is not illegal so long as there is no intention to offend anyone, but I am always in debate with myself whether I should cover up of I see others approach or continue walking without covering up. At the moment I always have my shorts close to hand to cover up if required as I’m not enough of a rebel not to do so. I’d love to walk about all day without a care in a world about others seeing me nude as I have no intention to offend at all. In reality, this is not so easy except in remote areas and not many of us nudists have the guts to do so (so I greatly admire your stand and guts to do the plinth).

If society and police here accepted public nudity more then I’d definitely go nude in public in urban areas too. I must admit to walking clothes free in in Barcelona , where public nudity is not illegal. It may be one of the craziest but also most liberating things I’ve ever done- I’d hear abot others doing so and as you can see in my edited photos I had to give it a go! It was so liberating so feel so free walking naked in such a public place (an unique experience)!

I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on this subject.

    Take care & stay bare.

    Martin

  20. Martin Says:

    Hi Kiran,

I admire your views on nudity.

Like you, I believe that the freedom of being clothes free is a natural thing and not something rude. I much prefer to be naked wherever and wherever I possibly can.

I was not brought up in a nudist family but with my own family I feel that being seen naked is not something to be ashamed of so I am often nude about the house and around the garden.

When I was a child and teenager I was very thin and was often teased that I had skinny legs. As a result I wouldn’t wear shorts in public in case I was teased again. However, I often wore shorts under my trousers so when I went for walks into the countryside I could remove my trousers and enjoy walking about in shorts, feeling the wind and sun on my skin.

One day in my teens, I stopped to sunbathe in a field and enjoyed soaking up the sun. The shorts I wore started to become sweaty so I decided to remove them too – and that was my first experience of outdoor nudity and so became a naturist.

After that, I found that I really enjoyed the freedom of being clothes free whenever I had the opportunity. However, naturism was something that I practised on my own and I still didn’t want anyone else to see me wearing shorts either and I was still self- conscious what others thought when they saw me!

When I was in my first year in University, I found a naturist beach a few miles away. I wanted out what it was like to be naked in public, so I found a quiet part of the beach, sat down and removed my clothes.

After a while I noticed that passers by weren’t bothered that I was naked on the beach, let alone that I had skinny legs!

So I finally decided to stand up and walk along the beach. I felt such a great sense of liberation in walking clothes-free along the beach and was surprised to see passers by smiling and saying ‘hello’ as if I was fully clothed.

Since then I have enjoyed visiting many naturist beaches but still found it a shame that naturism could only be publicly practised in naturist resorts, clubs or beaches.

Since then I am proud to say that I am a naturist and not afraid if others see me naked. In fact, I’ve had several of my naturist photos published in H&E Naturist magazine and are to be found on many naturist websites too.

Being naked outdoors is one of my passions and I often enjoy walking naked in the mountains near here and sometimes go running clothes free in the countryside. In doing so, I have my shorts close to hand in case I need to cover up but often question why I have to do so.

I must also admit that I have always been curious as to what it would be like to be naked in a very public place. So when I heard about the World Naked Bike Ride I had to give it a go. Having done the Manchester ride three times now, I must say that being totally naked in a city centre is a wonderfully liberating experience, which unfortunately one cannot experience everyday.

In addition I also heard and saw photos showing that simple public nudity is not illegal in Barcelona, so this was something I had to experience first hand during a visit there two years ago. So one morning , I left the hotel wearing a pair of shorts. I finally plucked up the courage to remove them after a few minutes and enjoyed the experience of walking around the city clothes free. Most passers by didn’t even seem to notice or care (including police) that I was naked and some even said a cheery ‘hola’ approvingly as I walked past.

Even though public nudity like this is tolerated by the public at times, it’s such a shame that modern society cannot accept all the time that nude is not rude!

    • John Lifeman Says:

The mention of Barcelona reminded me of when I used to more regularly visit Spain. Once I realised that in Spain it is legal to be nude more or less anywhere, I spent less time on naturist beaches. There were sometimes voyeurs and very rarely sexual behaviour that put me off-usually less than in the UK, but still there. I started going nude on regular beaches, initially in quieter places and usually being the first person to arrive in an area. New arrivals noticed, but It didn’t seem to put people off settling nearby. I’m sure some people did the same as me only because I had ‘set the scene’ and others choosing regular beachwear didn’t seem to keep away.

After some experience of this with the occasional dip in the sea, sometimes I started long walks down the beach, often knee deep or more in the sea so I wasn’t impinging on the sunbathers space, with nothing to encumber me other than a car key. This was so liberating. Over quite a few miles of walking in a number of locations, the responses I got were a few surprised looks, an occasional approving cheer or claps from groups of women, which I found quite amusing and completely unthreatening. I would smile back at them, feeling slightly self-conscious. Just one person, a man, ever objected. He pointed out the children around us. I told him that they weren’t taking any notice of me and that nudity was legal. Then I walked on to avoid any more confrontation. It shook me up a bit, but otherwise it felt so natural doing this, more so than on a nude beach with the odd voyeur who was there for a specific purpose.

I noticed it can be quite common to find naked sunbathers at the edge of the main beach, right where the beach side apartments end, so that is where I often choose to go. On a fair proportion of visits I was the first.

I’ve said it before (as have others on the comments, but you are a complete inspiration, not only to naturists from an indian background, but to anyone who has the slightest thought that this lifestyle might be for them.

You are a charmingly funny lady, and I look forward to many more exchanges with you!!

  23. Colin Hough Says:

I find your blog fascinating and am impressed by your extemely sensible approach to nudity.
My own discovery, or rediscovery, of naturism came for somewhat strange reasons. I inadvertently became a naturist on a quest to overcome my shyness.
As a child my parents had lived on the island of Tiree, and since it was a quiet island and there were loads of small sandy bays around the coast you could always get a beach to yourself. clothing was not something we bothered with during the summer. I don’t remember much about those years but for some reason when we moved to England, whilst we did go to studland beach often in the first few years, my parents gradually gave up their naturist lifestyle.
I don’t know why. (I should probably ask them) It may be because of the perceptions of others, it may be because as we grew up our neighbours thought it strange that we would be running around playing in the garden without clothes. It may be that my sister started being influenced by other children and started feeling uncomfortable being naked. By the time I was 8 we would no longer be going to nude beaches or be naked around the house.

Years passed and I grew up to be a very shy, self concious person. I was always worried about what people thought, worried not to offend them, intimidated by strangers etc. After a few years in a job I hated I went back to university to study Classics and Ancient history. I often had to make presentations and prepare conference papers etc and was determined to overcome my shyness. I thought that this would help me in life, in accademia etc.
Thinking back to my childhood I remembered the days when I used to play, carefree and naked on the beac and I decided to go to Studland. I thought that if I could cope with being naked in front of lots of strangers without getting frightened, then I could cope with any social situations. When I did strip off I found that rather than feeling nervous, I felt liberated. I enjoyed not having clothes, not hiding anything about myself and just letting people accept me exactly as I am.

Since then I like to enjoy a nudist lifestyle whenever I can. I’m not a big fan of lounging around sunbathing, which I find quite dull, but I do love the simple feeling of liberation which comes with being naked.
In many ways I find that simply stripping off allows me to shed all my anxieties. Previously, I would try to present a carefully created image of myself, being wary of how I dress, how I act, what I say and always worried about how people percieve me. When you shed your clothes and your apprehensions and just let people see you as you are, it takes a great weight off and in my case has allowed me to become a much happier and more complete person.
Being free to act however I like hasn’t made me a worse person. I am still habbitually nice, but that is just part of how I am and I’m happy with it.

I think that other people might find that shedding their clothes can help them to shed a whole lot more of their problems.

    and beauty.

I’m not as fortunate as you to be able to embrace nudity over here in Singapore. Nudity is gravely illegal here and there hardly is any community here that is as keen about naturism (except a few gay groups). Have to be a secret nudist here.

Keep being free and living free :>

Hi there – this is a terrific article, and a great ‘manifesto’ for naturism. There’s just one sentence I found confusing or ambiguous. You said: ‘It is NOT for sex as is the case for almost all the females who I have met through naturism.’ The first time I read that, it sounded as if you were saying most women you have met through naturism ARE involved for sex. I guess that’s not what you meant.

  27. Kayla Says:

Hey, I just want to applaud you for what you did in that public “performance”. Very brave. You rock. I’m a member of ynai.com and saw the links there to the video of that and to here. So now that I’ve read this too I know a littl more about you, and I totally agree with everything you say here about the lifestyle. I agree with the above comment about how you can be a rolemodel. I wish what you did were possible where I live here in the US. I hope if it were possible that I would have the guts to do something like it. As it is, I do try to encouage my friends to ask questions to better understand it. From what we see in the video, its hard to tell if anyone at all there was getting what was going on, but I hope it at least made some people think about it. Hopefully it will have more effect with people seeing it online. Also, I enjoyed your music choices 🙂

    Now for the next step.

After reading through Karina’s blog I find it so refreshing to know that there is a young, focused, centered and articulate person conveying naturism to the world. I completely understand and agree with what Centauri4 is saying above. It seems that her message will assist many curious/closet nudist to take their first step into social nudity acceptance. So anyone considering naturism I say give it a go and try it at home. After all, if you can’t be clothes free in your own home where can you be… Lets be honest folks, we only come in two models and everyone knows what they look like there aren’t any suprises.

A question for you Karina, how is your mom, dad, cousins… taking your open approach to the lifestyle.

This is certainly one of the best, most thoughtful and honest Blog postings on socially acceptable nudity I have EVER read! It is not easy to convey such feelings, sentiments and motivations as you have, and do it in an interesting a entertaining way, but I feel you have done well.

After completing my primary education, through grade twelve in the United States, it was only then that I discovered an acceptance of nudity that up until that point I had feared! Yes! Very little showering after physical education for me in school; I lacked the self-confidence and could not bring myself to face my peers at that age!

So this makes it even more unusual that AFTER the shy, awkward teenage years my attraction to simple social nudity was like a switch had been flipped in my brain. No, this was not a sexual thing although I consider myself to have been a normal teenage male with all the same emerging desires and urges, yet I had no desire to do “it” and risk becoming a father and permanently alter my future. I saw “Fun in the Sun” and was amazed by the simple pictures of people of all ages doing everyday things without clothing! “This cannot be!” I thought. Where in the world are people this comfortable, so comfortable to be smiling or beaming with radiant happiness? I had never experienced anything like this and was overwhelmed with curiosity; the year was 1986.

From there the story of my reading up on the history of nudism in America and its roots in Europe and Germany’s FKK movement came next and everything culminated in my return to Virginia and a wonderful visit to White Tail Park (now White Tail Resort), a small but family-friendly nudist place with a variety of amenities and nice setting for first time socially nude experiences.

I hope you will keep writing and this information will enlighten others and, as you say, encourage them to give it a go!

I found your blog yesterday & it captured my interest with some very unique things that I noticed upon reading it.

I must say that your performance on the Plinth at Trafalgar was a courageous & bold effort to promote to the general public the understanding of nudity as a natural & fun way to live. And, having it done by a female of Asian decent (Indian to be exact), does not come across as something common that happens everyday.

I’ve lived in the UK for a couple of years some time ago, & have had many friends of Indian or Pakistani decent. Being an Asian myself, I understood the sort of upbringing they were subject to, where it pretty much has to conform to culture, tradition, & of course religious norms. And, of course nudity is a taboo subject of sorts. But, to have someone like you come forward to state your cause on the right to embrace nudity as a way of life is very unique & big move that must be commended.

Coming from South East Asia myself, I am always excited & interested to find more & more nudists/naturists of Asian heritage & background. It is interesting to know & learn how they accustom & adapt themselves as nudists/naturists within their own environment & to what extent do they live the life of a nudist/naturist.

Not many of us are as fortunate as you in terms of having some form of family support to your naturist lifestyle & of course support & opportunity for your endeavor to its cause.

Therefore seeing you as a young woman, who was able to come out & stand up to what you believe in & attempt to get others to understand may well make you a role model for women not only in the UK but, in other parts of the world too, most particularly, Asia. Cheers!

As I’ve been catching up on your blog(just found out about it today) I see you had a lot of the same concerns I would have had if it was me on the plinth. I salute your bravery for facing your fears and speaking out about what you believe is right. I think you can become a much needed role model for women in naturism and the movement overall.
